A select group of wealthy Spaniards, who no doubt spend their days doom-scrolling on X, are buying bunkers at a steal in Madrid, Barcelona, and southern Spain.
If you’re thinking of joining them in their underground boltholes, I hope you’ve got some spare wedge.
A nuclear bunker retails for $50,0000+.
And that’s for the barebones model.
The bunkers measure eight metres by three metres and are fitted with a fresh oxygen supply, a gym, a kitchen, and beds.
Built like a submarine hull, these bunkers can withstand explosions and pressure from the surrounding water and earth. They can house a few lucky residents for up to a year. That sounds like the perfect retreat for a classic introvert like me.
Alas planning laws in Ireland are notoriously hard to negotiate, and real estate is at a premium. So, I’ve no plans to purchase an underground Chez Collins soon.
The fact that people are spending so much money on something most regard as doomscrolling manifested got me thinking about niche selection.
You see, I was a niche website owner for a few years.
Running a content website about nuclear bunkers would be fun. Imagine all the conventions they’d invite me to. And the doomsday listicles I could write.
“11 signs the apocolpyse is already here (that nobody knows)
“Could This $50k Doomsday Bunker Be Your Dream Home?”
“How I’d Spend My Last 24 Hours Before the End of the World”
It’d be a great niche, too.
Facebook peeps would eat this kind of fear-mongering up.

You can build a six or even a seven-figure content business if you pick a niche where there’s:
demand and
money
The more of both, the better your chances of success.
Only a few niches or topics tick both boxes these days.
It was crypto a few years ago, today, it’s AI.
I was coaching a client a while ago. He wanted to write to start a blog about Marvel superheroes. He showed me a few articles he’d written, too.
Demand? Yes, superhero nerds like me love Marvel.
But money? Not so much.
Marvel fans will wait in line for hours, but most of us aren’t spending much more than the cost of a ticket, some oversized bags of popcorn and coke.
So next time you’re thinking about a niche or topic, focus on what people want AND what they’re spending lots of wedge.
